I began work on laying down the new boards Friday night, and with the sun long gone and my porch light trying to shine as bright as it could I was forced to turn in and pray for a sunny Saturday. To my amazement, and relief, I woke up the next day to a bright sunny day. Work couldn't have gone smoother, and I completely resurfaced the deck in time to enjoy a picnic style lunch with the family on our new deck. After a few close calls with my son however I was reminded of the importance for a banister. As it turns out the banister was a bit trickier then I had thought, and so my afternoon project took over the rest of the weekend. By Sunday though I was enjoying the beauty of my almost completed deck.

As the week went by and the next weekend crawled ever closer I found myself wondering in what ways I could make the project better. By Wednesday afternoon I had ordered a reconstructed wooden spiral staircase that would provide an interesting touch to my deck. The only problem is, it was much too heavy for me to set in place by myself. So as I waited for the delivery of my staircase I rounded up three of my friends, one of which was all to happy to help with the lifting. When the stair case finally arrived, me and two other grabbed one end, while my hulk of a friend grabbed the other end by himself. You can see the pictures of my new stair case to the side, I hope you enjoy it as much as my family.

The Battle

As with most home renovation projects, the hardest part was getting started. The deck wasn't in horrible condition, it just wasn't what I had in mind; I was looking for an area to entertain guests, and enjoy evenings with my family. So with thoughts of barbeques swimming through my mind I began looking around at prices and methods for building a deck, and after a month or so of doing some research I was ready to begin my deck renovation project.

The first step was to disassemble the current deck, which I ended up getting done in remarkably good time. After only two days of moderate work by myself the deck was down to the basics, and a few days ahead of schedule. With the old wood stacked by the side of the house, and the new wood stacked near my project area I started to organize myself for the next weekend.
